Important Cables Parameters

Resistance (R)
measured in Ohms/Unit lenght (Km.) the resistance of the conductors is an important primary factors to the determination of the signal carring capacity of the trasmission line. The resistance value is also the ratio of the electrical resistivity of the conductor material to its physical cross-sectional area. For microphone cable conductor resistance range: 108-200 ohm/Km.

Capacitance (C)
mesured in picofarad unit length (mt.) and refers on audio cables, between conductor or conductors and shield. For trasmission applications is desiderable use cables with low-dielectric-costant materials like proplylene or cellular polyethylene or polypropylene. For microphone cable the range is 40-100 pF/mt. (between conductors).The capacitance vary also varies with the distance between conductors.

Attenuation (Alfa)
Mesured in dB/Unit lenght(mt.). Attenuation determines the trasmission level loss of a line. The main factors witch cause attenuation are resistive loss in the conductor (mainly due to conductor skin effect at high frequency) and loss in the dielectric.

Inductance
The inductance of a circuit or an individual conductors may play a part in performance of a loudspeaker-to-amplifier interconnection or ground or bonding wire. Straighforward formulas have been developed for varius configurations. For a pair of conductors forming a cable ( a balanced circuit with send and return wires), inductance depends on the spacing between conductors (determinate by the isulation tickness), the size of conductors (determinate by the Gauge and the length of cable. L= 0.004( ln(d/r+1/4+d/l)).

L = inductance in uH
l = length of conductors in cm
d = center to center separation of conductors
r = radius of conductors in cm
ln = natural logaritm
